Senate Bill 5791 | Update

SB 5791 was passed out of the Senate Ways and Means Committee 24 – 0 a unanimous vote.  The Committee by a vote 22–2 forwarded the bill to the Rules committee with a recommendation of do pass.  We now have to get the bill passed out of the Senate Rules committee to the Senate floor for final passage out of the Senate.  The bill will then go to the House Appropriations committee to repeat the same progressive process as in the Senate. When and if the bill is passed in the House it will go to the Governor for signature.

The sixty-day legislative session was called to order on January 10, 2022.  The session will end on March 10, 2022.  The Governor can call for a special session after the close of the regular session but usually only for a budget issue.  The cut-off date for bills to be passed including SB 5791 is March 4, 2022.  We have a lot of work to do in a short period of time.

Conversations with Senators suggest that this bill will pass and we are reaching out to our contacts to get the bill out of Rules and onto the Senate floor.

You help in contacting the members of the Senate Rule committee is needed. It would also be helpful to contact any and all Senators to express your support for the bill and to ask for their support. This is the best tool we have at this point to advance the bill.
